That Tricky V

It can be easy to dislike the word vagina.
It’s so often used in a medical context that’s not enjoyable for us.

And do ya know, the Latin origin of vagina means "sheath" or “scabbard”? At the time of vagina’s conception, a common term for penis was gladius, meaning "sword". So, basically this original Latin insinuates that a vagina’s purpose is to hold a penis.

Alright, it seems clear that vagina was not a name created by vagina-having folks! But let’s dig deeper. Etymology often reveals hidden truths.

About that "sheath"...
We keep in a sheath what is prized or delicate. Without a sheath, an instrument becomes dull and damaged and loses its power. Objects of fine craftsmanship or rare materials lose their value.

A sheath is a place where preciousness is kept and maintained.
That which is held in a sheath is important only because of the sheath itself.

That which enters is made sacred.

Modern use of vagina technically refers to the "passageway" into the body, through which we can meet our pelvic bowl, cervix (entrance to the uterus) and urethral sponge tissues (the g-spot!).

Learning to take care of our body can be a passageway into ourselves. Our root is a direct portal to our nervous system, that vast network of lightening-quick perception and response that governs our every feeling and action. The vagina is a path, a path through which we meet the truth of who we are.

Gynecology belongs to people with vaginas. This is OUR medicine.
And to take back gynecology, we gotta take back vagina too.

While we are on the subject of taboo words, can we talk about pussy for a minute?!

I think pussy so beautifully conveys the sensuality and sass of our erectile tissues and arousal response.

Asia Suler of One Willow Apothecaries writes,

“Like the big cats from which they were named, pussies hold the same sense of autonomy, elegance, softness, and power. Pussies grace us with their purring presence, and yet with a single hiss can set a non-negotiable boundary. Pussies enjoy themselves thoroughly, take pleasure whenever they want it, and yet answer to no one. Pussies belong to themselves, give only when they feel like it, and yet are adored. Pussies are innately sensual, sovereign, mysterious, and mystical.”

Also, have you ever TRIED to get your/your lover’s pussy interested in something it didn't want? It's like trying to herd cats. The pussy don't lie! 🤣

With love from the V,
Muse
